just like them

they lived in her for decades
she never knew their names
though she swore she would recognize
their faces anywhere
even beneath a mask

they had an anger-like shape
a scent like something
was constantly burning
and laughter full of apathy, as though
nothing would make any difference

until one day, when a beautiful creature
showed up at her door

quietly telling her that in her attempts
to fight her demons, she became
exactly like them
