late afternoon

a man was standing at the bus stop
seemingly accepting
whatever was coming
as he quietly waited behind the crowd
never intending to get onboard any
of the buses that came and went

minutes passed, becoming an hour
the sun was descending
shadows were getting longer

the man remained standing at the bus stop

finally a bus pulled up at the curb
out came a woman, face beaming
as he gave her the widest, honest smile
before a loving embrace

I could’ve sworn the sun
lingered longer at the horizon
just so he could watch them walk away
hand in hand
