alien at home

That place has been home for years
its beauty and flaws, a part of hers
taught her much of what she knew,
showed her how to be strong
continuously whispering words
of encouragement
to go for what she wanted.

After a while she heard them
not only telling her to jump higher
but also demanding that she brought back
bigger bling
and more ka-ching
otherwise the jumps would not matter
even though she’d die trying.

Today she is stuck
in an endless loop of love and hate
and though she’s at home,
at night she looks in the mirror and sees
a weary alien.
